As an appreciation toward military members and their families, most automakers offer a range of incentives towards purchasing new vehicles. While it varies between brands, incentives can range from around $500, all the way up to $4,500 off the purchase of a new vehicle. You’ll often find special deals on used cars as well. Additionally, many individual dealerships may have special military offers and incentives.

Here’s what you need to do in order to claim your military discount at the car dealership.

Confirm Your Eligibility. Automakers regularly offer deals and incentives to various groups of military members. These may include:

• Active military—anyone who works full-time for the military and may be deployed at any time.
• Reservists—people who do not work for the military full-time but who can be available for active duty when needed.
• Retired military—anyone who was in the military for at least 20 years and/or whose military service ended because of a physical disability.
• Veterans—anyone who served in any branch of the military and was discharged or released for any reason other than a dishonorable one.
• Military dependents—a military member’s spouse or minor children, plus other family members they may claim as dependents, such as parents or stepchildren.

Each automaker sets its military discounts independently, so eligibility varies depending on which OEM is providing the discount.

Bring Your Documentation. In order to get your military discount, you’ll need to prove your military credentials by showing documentation at the dealership or entering information from those documents online. Depending on your military status, you will need one or more of the following documents:

Can I get my military discount overseas?
If you are stationed overseas, you can still take advantage of military discounts. Several automakers offer military car sales programs. One benefit of buying overseas is that most international military car sales programs feature fixed-rate pricing, so the cost of your car won’t fluctuate with the exchange rate. Your purchase is tax-free while you’re overseas, but you may have to pay tax when you return: check with your dealership for more details.

Are there holiday discounts for military members?
Most automakers offer military discounts on an ongoing basis, but the deals can definitely get sweeter around the holidays, especially Memorial Day, Veterans Day, and Independence Day.
