2013 NAIAS: Volkswagen CrossBlue Concept

Volkswagen, which is looking for world domination in terms of total auto sales unveiled a midsize crossover utility concept called the CrossBlue that would expected to compete with the Dodge Durango, Ford Explorer, Honda Pilot, Nissan Pathfinder and Toyota Highlander when it enters actual production.

The CrossBlue concept would be propelled by a plug-in diesel hybrid powerplant, and has three rows to seat up to six passengers in six individual seats (with an option of the second row to have three seats to fit seven).  Its styling is very similar to the Touareg crossover and could offer a rating of 35 MPG combined and 89 MPGe in electric mode.  The range in the all-electric mode is up to 14 miles.  The CrossBlue will have a powertrain that can produce up to 305 horsepower and accelerate from 0 to 60 in 7.2 seconds.

“The CrossBlue concept is exactly the right type of vehicle for the U.S. market,” said Jonathan Browning, President and CEO, Volkswagen Group of America in a statement. “It combines a truly versatile interior layout with sophisticated Volkswagen design, to give a unique and supremely stylish offering in this segment.”

The onboard entertainment system includes iPad mini devices integrated as monitors so second- and third-row passengers can receive audio, video, and online entertainment.
